What Is a Tweet Counter?
A tweet counter is a tool that tracks the number of characters in your tweet in real time, helping you stay within Twitter's 280-character limit. Writing a tweet that exceeds the limit means you cannot post it, and trimming it down after the fact can be frustrating. This free tweet counter gives you instant feedback as you type, showing your character count, word count, and remaining characters, so you can craft the perfect tweet without any guesswork.
How to Use the Tweet Counter
Using this tool is as simple as typing. Start writing or paste your tweet into the text area and the counter updates instantly with every keystroke. The circular progress indicator fills up as you approach the 280-character limit and changes color to give you a visual warning when you are getting close. When you are happy with your tweet, click Copy Tweet to copy it to your clipboard and paste it directly into Twitter or X.
Understanding Twitter's Character Limit
Twitter, now rebranded as X, allows up to 280 characters per tweet for standard accounts. This limit was doubled from the original 140 characters in 2017 to give users more room to express themselves. URLs in tweets are automatically shortened to 23 characters regardless of their actual length, and images, videos, and other media attachments do not count toward the character limit. Replies that begin with a username also have that username counted in the total.
Tips for Writing Great Tweets
The best tweets are concise, clear, and direct. Start with the most important information since many readers do not read past the first line. Use simple language and avoid unnecessary filler words. If your message genuinely needs more than 280 characters, consider writing a thread — a series of connected tweets numbered 1, 2, 3 and so on. This tool will suggest a thread when your text exceeds the limit. Adding a question, a call to action, or a strong opinion tends to drive more engagement and replies.
