What is a salary calculator?
A Salary Calculator is an online tool that helps you convert your pay between hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and annual periods. It can be useful when comparing job offers, planning a budget, reviewing an hourly rate, or understanding how different pay periods relate to one another.
Enter your gross pay amount, select the corresponding pay period, and provide the number of hours you work per week. The calculator then provides an estimated breakdown across all supported pay periods.
How to use the salary calculator
- Enter your pay amount: Enter the amount you earn for the selected pay period.
- Select the pay period: Choose Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, or Annual.
- Enter your weekly hours: The default is 40 hours per week, but you can adjust it for your actual schedule.
- Click Calculate: The calculator will display the equivalent amounts for each supported pay period.
How salary conversions are calculated
The calculator uses a standard 52-week year. Hourly calculations are based on the number of hours worked per week that you enter. Daily pay is based on five working days per week, while weekly pay is multiplied by 52 to estimate annual income. Bi-weekly pay is based on 26 pay periods per year, and monthly pay is calculated by dividing annual income by 12.
These calculations are estimates for gross income and do not include taxes, benefits, deductions, overtime, bonuses, or paid time off.
Gross vs. net salary
Gross salary is the amount you earn before taxes and other deductions. Net salary, sometimes called take-home pay, is the amount you receive after applicable taxes, insurance premiums, retirement contributions, and other deductions have been taken out.
This Salary Calculator focuses on gross income. Because tax rules and deductions vary by location and individual circumstances, they are not included in the calculation.
Why salary conversions are useful
Understanding your income across different pay periods can make budgeting and financial planning easier. A monthly figure can help with recurring expenses, while weekly or bi-weekly figures can make it easier to plan day-to-day spending. Annual income is also commonly used when comparing job offers, negotiating compensation, or completing financial applications.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
No. The calculator estimates gross salary before taxes and other deductions. Tax rates and deductions vary depending on your location and personal circumstances.
Monthly salary is calculated by dividing the estimated annual salary by 12. This provides an average monthly figure rather than an amount based on the exact number of days in each calendar month.
In this calculator, Bi-Weekly means a pay period that occurs every two weeks, resulting in 26 pay periods per year. This is different from being paid twice per month, which normally results in 24 pay periods per year.
Yes. Enter the number of hours you actually work per week. The calculator will use that value when converting hourly income and estimating the equivalent pay periods.
